US NAVY Seabees NL Pontoon Barge. Aseembly model kit made from resin and photoetched parts. Contains no paint or glue. Sclae 1:72. For adult colectors over 14 years old
History
In 1941 the U.S. Navy established the engineering battalions, later called the Seabees. To fill Seabees needs a pontoon system also known as “magic box” was designed by Bureau of Yards and Docks. System of modular pontoons allowed the assembly of many of the necessary floating constructions, both for the landing operations, as well as transportation and engineering. Model barge is just an example of such use of pontoons.
Barge 3 / 7 consisted of three rows of seven pontoons (including elements of the bow and stern) and propulsion module, which contained a 115 hp engine, gearbox and steering. Barge could be used to transport ammunition, fuel, equipment and even airplanes, from cargo ships to shore. Was also used as a floating gas station for LVT.

This kit is a great addition to everyone interested in Naval and Military equipment alike. Rem. NL was used for Rhine crossing too, often as a barge with crawler or piledriver on it. The kit itself is very fine casted, detail is nice, and the casting blocks are placed convinient for the modeller, e.g. on the underside of the pontoon parts. Assembly is straightforward, esp. with the great instructiond provided. Some fine parts are provided in photoetched form, but not too many or too complicate to even recommend the kit for beginners. My rating is 4 stars for the kit alone plus 1 star extra for instructions and the idea of a NL kit. Makes 5 stars and they deserve them! |
